The residents of Trim are to mark the 25th anniversary of the filming of ‘Braveheart’ with an open-air screening of the popular movie in the Town on Saturday, August 13th next.
A major weekend of activity is planned to celebrate the hugely successful Hollywood film which won the Oscar for ‘Best Picture’ in 1996 and put Trim firmly on the international tourism map.
“We have a wonderful weekend of entertainment lined up which will appeal to a wide range of film fans and historians,” said Eric Lawlor of the Trim Tourism Network.
“It all kicks off at 1 pm on Saturday, August 13th. We will have 15 traders on-site at the lands adjacent to Trim Castle.
“Members of the William Wallace Society are flying in from Scotland, there will be archery demonstrations, a pipe- band concert and a number of actors who took part in the production of the movie, have promised to attend.”
The screening of the movie will take place at 8 pm and the organisers have hired a massive LED screen which will ensure there will be no issues over visibility.
“Unfortunately, we have had to pay a sizeable sum of money for the screen and sound system as well as forking out a four-figure fee to cover copyright costs for the public screening.
“To cover these expenses, the charge for attending the screening will be €25 per person or €60 for a family ticket,” said Eric.
The movie, which was filmed in Trim and in Scotland, has a 12 Cert which means it is only suitable for persons from the age of 13 upwards.
Hollywood actor and producer Mel Gibson, whose ancestors originated from counties Longford and Tipperary, has prepared a greetings message for the occasion.
He and fellow actors Brendan Gleeson and David O’Hara have also signed personal pictures which will be auctioned on the day as part of a fund-raising drive to send a jeep convoy of aid to Ukraine.
A giant mural depicting Braveheart imagery has also gone on display in the Town.
The weekend of activity will not end on Saturday night.
According to Eric, “On Sunday [August 14th] we’re holding a Michael Collins day. It will feature speeches, a full-colour party and we’ll even have Clonakilty pudding.
“We’ll also be screening ‘The Greatest Showman’ which will appeal to young children.
“Between ‘Braveheart’, Michael Collins and Ukraine, the theme of the weekend will be Freedom.
“This event was supposed to take place two years but unfortunately Covid put the kybosh on it so we’re only getting around to it now,” said Eric.
The movie ‘Braveheart’ was one of the most successful movies of the 1990s decade, despite receiving criticism from certain elements of the English media.
It portrays William Wallace who led the Scottish in the battle against the forces of King Edward 1 of England.
Produced with a budget of $70 million, it took over $213 million in receipts across the world.
The movie was nominated in ten categories at the 1996 Oscar ceremonies in Los Angeles and won in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Photography, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Make-up categories.
In 2010, the Independent Film and Television Alliance cited the movie as one of the 30 most significant independent films of the previous 30 years.
